Between Shelter and Home
A Novel
Brought from Latvia into forced settlement in the Tomsk region, Austra Mezule has few choices about where she will live. Sharing a room with the unrelated Juris Kalve seems easier than facing every question alone. It becomes harder when his help begins to assume her time.
Their householder, Natalya, welcomed the lodgers for reasons she has not fully admitted, while hoping her adult daughter would come home. Through workdays, meals, visits and one damaging promise, the three discover how little they agree about what they owe one another.
Between Shelter and Home follows an invented household from its first spring toward winter within a researched postwar setting. With dry humor and difficult affection, Brina Crestfold tells a story in which a changed relationship does not require an easy escape.
